Gil isn't quite certain when Jack led him away from the rest of the party. The overall mood had turned considerably more intense as children were taken inside the bar to sleep.

The bonfire still burns brightly, the warmth is felt for many yards.

Standing within the shelter of the trees, he can make out Jack's face by its light.

He is beautiful.

Grissom manages to get the door open without dropping Jack. Once inside, he lays him down on the bed as carefully as he can, before leaving briefly.

He returns with a pitcher of iced water and some light chicken broth.

Feeling somewhat helpless, he looks at his lover. "Did you overdo it today?" he wonders out loud.

It is almost like watching a movie about himself. The man he sees is laughing, uncaring about whom might observe. He walks hand in hand with another man, ignoring disapproving stares.

This can't last he finds himself thinking. He will leave me--or I'll frighten myself away.

This can't last.

In his work he has seen promises of forever ripped apart in an instant.

But he can't help feeling the same promise of forever, whenever he looks into Jack's eyes.

Grissom wakes up, feeling both disturbed and resolved. Whatever the cost, he will be worth it.

I'll make myself worth it.

Waking up alone was no longer satisfying.

A slender hand clenches, opening to reveal a rose.

"Why do roses fascinate you?" He smiles, eyes watching Jack more than the flower.

"They are beautiful. And they are symbolic in many cultures on Earth. Why should I not admire them?" A gentle smile. The rose is teased along Grissom's profile.

"Unless you would rather I spend my time admiring you, Gil." Affectionate teasing with a playful wink.

"You mean you weren't doing that before? I was certainly admiring you." An answering smile before Grissom leans forward...

He wakes up, gasping this time.

"What the hell was that about?"

Grissom dreams.

He knows REM sleep is essential for maintaining balance and integrity within one's mind. Nightmares are common for those in his profession.

He dreams. And he is not afraid.

A rose is proffered and the thorns do not prick. Jack smiles at him, eyes brimming with a tender amusement.

"What purpose have you found, Gil? Why are you here?"

He can only smile in return. The rose turns into a ladybug, flitting between them.

"What other purpose would I need, other than to know you?"

He wakes up, frowning at the ceiling.

Gil Grissom, forensic entomologist extraordinaire, paced his office, cursing.

Damn that Ecklie. First he breaks up my team. Then he goes after Sara. And now, he's fired her. And she isn't fighting it.

Did I hurt her that badly? I swear to god, I didn't mean to.

She's looked so lifeless whenever she's come into the lab lately. She hasn't worked overtime and was out of touch the entire time she was on vacation.

I have to talk to her.

Coming to that decision, he leaves his office, ignoring the puzzled looks of his coworkers. Let them wonder--Ecklie wouldn't dare fire him. And he would quickly realize the professional repercussions of his actions. The lab would quickly lose its standing without Sidle's skills.

Driving as quickly as he could, he reached her apartment building. Discreet inquiries with the manager inform him that she has not moved out, but arranged payments for six months to a year, electric and water done the same way.

She's gone somewhere. And she's not here.

He turns to walk out of the building.
