"What're we gonna do without you?" The audible note of distress in Nick's voice made Grissom pause in his packing.

"I'm presuming you mean beyond solving crimes," he said benignly, looking over at the younger man.

"First Sara...now you. We're losing all the greats and---"

"--and things change, Nicky. You know that." Grissom kept his voice gentle and kind. "You are a good CSI. You, Catherine, Greg, Warrick--you will be fine. And those who come after will benefit from your intelligence, experience, and compassion."

"Won't be the same," Nick muttered rebelliously, pulling down books from the top of one bookcase, packing them methodically in a box.

"No, it won't," Grissom agreed quietly. "You said a few months ago, when you thought my retirement was imminent, that you would miss me. The same goes for you--for all of you. I never imagined I would be part of such a fine team."

".....thanks," Nick said finally, taping the box down.

"You know that you can call, correct?"

"We'll all be taking you up on that."

Las Vegas

The date is an important one, of course. Georgia's birthday has already been celebrated and Gil has been busy spoiling her to his heart's content.

"--no, sweetheart, you can't hold that yet," he tells her gently, removing a snowglobe from her tiny hands.

Finding himself in the doorway of his daughter's nursery didn't surprise him as much as it probably should have, considering that he had fallen asleep with Jack's arm around his waist, on the couch.

A slight figure stooped over the cradle, smiling at the sleeping child, fingers slowly forming symbols achingly familiar and long missed.

Hello, Mother, he signed after she had turned her face towards his. Their eyes were the same shade of blue.

Gil! Your daughter is so beautiful, his mother signed back, beaming.

We named her for you. Georgia Rose.

She patted his face, the faint scent of lilacs following her hand. You were such a good boy. My bright, brilliant boy. I am so glad you've found one who understands you.

He does, Mother. In all ways. I never dreamed---

I told you to never lose your dreams, Gilbert. Strange how he could hear a faintly scolding tone in his mind, even though they weren't making any sounds.

You did. I'd forgotten that for a time.

Georgia turned in her sleep, and Rose looked back down at her, face softening again.

But you will remember it now?

He nodded and his mother smiled at him.

That's good, Gil. You deserve to have joy and dreams. She kissed his cheek, patting his face once again. I love you, my son.

I love you, Mother.

His eyes opened. He was still on the couch with Jack's arm around him.

Breathing in deeply, he could smell lilacs. And he smiled.

Las Vegas

It was hard to sleep. Gil had grown accustomed to Jack's comforting presence and warmth beside him in their bed.

I heard there was a secret chord that David played, and it pleased the Lord.

He'll be back, Sara had told him, unnecessarily. That wasn't something he doubted.

But you don't really care for music, do you?

Jack would return to him and to Georgia. Gil did not fear solitude for the rest of his life.

It goes like this, the fourth-the fifth. The minor fall, the major lift. The baffled king composing Hallelujah.

What he did fear was seeing a stranger behind his husband's eyes.

Maybe I've been here before. I know this room, I've walked this floor. I used to live alone before I knew you.

I love you for all of you, Jack had said. Gil did not doubt the truth of those words. Jack could not lie.

I've seen your flag on the marbled arch. Love is not a victory march--it's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah.

But it was still hard to sleep without him. Cradling his daughter against him, Gil hummed, walking back and forth in the nursery.

"Happy Father's Day, Gil," was the first thing Sara told him when he opened the door.

He chuckled, "Thank you, Sara. Won't you come in?"

"I can't--I need to get ready for a deposition tomorrow. I wanted to bring this by for Jack. Give it to him for me?"

"Of course. The Meloni case, correct?"

She nodded, making a face. "The evidence is solid but--"

"But the lawyer is ruthless. Be careful."

"Will do."

Anniversary

When Jack wakes up in the afternoon, he will find a card resting on the pillow next to him.

On the cover is a lovely sketch of his and Gil's hands entwined gently.

On the inside is a simple message.

One year ago, I kissed you for the first time. I was extremely frightened and did not know how to react to what I was feeling, nor how to accept the love you had for me, even then.

I look forward to many more years with you, my beloved.

Love always,
Gil.

Pick up, Sara. Let me know you're all right.

The call went to voicemail for the sixth time.

Getting in his vehicle, he drove to her last location, the latest crime scene. Walking inside, he saw files scattered and a bloody field kit.

Ten minutes later, the rest of the team had assembled at the sight.

"We're going with the assumption that he wanted her alive," he said roughly, refusing to consider the alternative.

"Spread out, people. See what we can find."

Room 32

I am a man of my word.

Grissom hasn't left Sara's side since that moment outside. Forgoing his normal reticence, he is holding her and letting her cry, sorrowing in turn for the loss of a genuinely decent man.

She's fallen asleep at this point, but he isn't going to move for fear of waking her.

"I spoke with the DA," Grissom said somberly to the weeping woman in his office. "He's willing to give you some community service time for your assault, and said he understood your motivation. Frankly, Heather, you are very lucky."

There are many emotions underlying his words. Sorrow, for the loss of a bright and promising young woman. Empathy for the mother. His eyes turned, unbidden, to the picture on his desk.

And so this is Christmas.

"Did you enjoy your first Christmas?" he hears himself asking, breaking their peaceful silence.

Lights twinkle from a small, artfully decorated tree. Wrapping paper, gathered up from where it had been strewn by a very enthusiastic god, burned in the fireplace.

Music played softly from a corner stereo, not disturbing the sleeping child resting in Gil's arms.

Jack does not answer him this time with words. The unadulterated joy on his face spoke louder than anything he could have hoped to convey.

"I love you," he whispers then, brushing a kiss on top of Georgia's head before doing the same to his husband.

A hand covers the one resting gently on the child's back. "And I love you," Jack says quietly, snuggling close.

Las Vegas.

She's two days old and absolutely perfect. Her eyes are wide, taking in all she sees around her, the few times she isn't sleeping.

He had heard stories of how frazzled new parents were during the first days of a child's life. He is used to sleep deprivation and staying up at odd hours. In that sense, his routine has not change.

But now it consists of listening to gentle breathing in the stillness of a room, quiet giggles when he bends to pick her up.

For the second time in his life, Gil Grissom fell in love at first sight.

He sits in a rocking chair, giving Georgia another feeding. And cannot honestly claim to have ever been happier.

He hasn't used this room in months, but is pleased to see the things he stocked here.

Carrying Georgia over to the sink, he cradles her tenderly and waits for Jack to arrive.

Las Vegas

It was the first true family dinner Gil had had in years. He had been nervous when Jack told him Sheila had accepted their offer--how does one entertain a Goddess, precisely? Particularly one that is acting as surrogate?

Things seemed to go well enough, with much laughter and revelry. He and Jack couldn't seem to keep their hands off of Sheila's belly, marveling at their own private miracle.

It was a good Thanksgiving.

OOM: The Crime Lab

The lab is always busy even during relatively "calm" periods. The sights and sounds of technicians frantically scurrying from one location to the other is almost soothing to the experienced criminalist.

One such criminalists strides through the door into his domain, a stranger following at his heels.

Welcome to the crime lab, Tony Almeida.

India

There are so many things he has not seen. The insects alone would take a hundred lifetimes to truly study. Mountains in the distance stretch high into the heavens and he wants to explore.

The heat of the desert, a true desert, not like the one back in Nevada, is welcome. The dry air pulls at his skin, hot breaths dancing against the back of his neck. He need not fear lack of water or ever getting lost.

Perhaps the most wondrous sight greets his eyes each time he turns, for Jack is ever there by his side. Light glinting off of their rings, his beloved voice crooning husband when they join.

Who knew married life would truly be so wonderful?

Las Vegas Crime Lab

He paused outside of the door to the conference room, looking at his team. He watched Warrick laugh, playfully smacking Nick's arm. Greg provided a counter to whatever argument they were having and the two veterans immediately pounced on the former DNA technician.

Sara was sitting on the other side of the table, shaking her head at whatever Catherine was telling her, repeating "I did NOT want to know that!" in louder and louder tones, though the two refused to elaborate when the guys pestered.

His team. His family in many ways, the people he had mentored, nurtured, and guided through the harsh realities that comprised their profession. He was proud of them, he served them as much as they served him.

"Guys, there is something we need to discuss. It is...personal. And some of you," his gaze drifted to the two women, "already know what I am going to say. I ask that you bear with me."

Over the course of the next hour, he told the unaware that he was committing himself to another man--ignoring the flash of annoyance when Warrick sighed and gave half his money to Greg--and within the next year he would be leaving the lab.

Nick looked stunned, Greg looked hurt and Warrick looked resigned at the news. The three immediately turned to Sara, wondering how she was holding up under such news.

When she only smiled, calm acceptance on her face, they turned back to Grissom. They congratulated him and vowed that if this stranger ever hurt him, the body would not be found.

He smiled now, watching them bicker amongst themselves and the night's assignments. His team had always done him proud.

His phone rings. He answers with a gruff, "Grissom."

He listens intently. "That's a shame. She was a good CSI." There is no emotion behind the words.

"Did she have a will?" He takes off his glasses, sitting up in surprise. "She did what? Oh--I understand. Yes, that's very much like her. I'll take care of the memorial--oh, she's arranged for that already. Thank you for informing me. Goodbye."

He turns off his phone, rubbing at his face. "You named the child, Sara? You established a foundation in her name? You miscarried..."

Pain makes his face twist momentarily. "Rosalinda. Pretty Rose. What were you trying to say?"

He reaches into his desk, pulling out an old picture of them. He wipes off the dust.

"I'm sorry," he finally whispers.

Picture in hand, he walks out the door.

"All I am saying, Gil, is that I wish you would delay your vacation for a better time." Ecklie sounded almost desperate.

He did not pause as he continued to feed his insects. "I'm sorry you feel that way, Conrad, however it has been my experience that there is never a convenient time for a vacation as far as the lab is concerned. I'm sure Sofia will handle running nightshift for three weeks."

Errands completed, he nodded cordially at the other man before leaving the building.
